Juneteenth Barbecue Sauce

One of my favorite summer pastimes is grilling. Ok, let me be honest, as long as it isn’t snowing, I’m grilling. The flavor can’t be beat, the recipe options are nearly endless, and cleanup is minimal. As we approach June 19th, or Juneteenth. I thought a homemade barbecue sauce would be a great Urban Food Scene recipe to share.

A sweet and spicy barbecue sauce perfect for Juneteenth!

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces tomato paste

  • 1/8 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1 medium onion, small diced

  • 1 medium green bell pepper, small diced

  • 1 ounce rendered bacon fat

  • 1/2 cup orange juice

  • 1-1/2 ounce worcestershire sauce

  • 2 ounces molasses

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 2 cups water

  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1/2 tablespoon creole seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

  • In a medium sauce pot, carmelize the onion in the bacon fat.
  • Add the green pepper and saute until soft.
  • Add the tomato paste and stir to incorporate.
  • Add the molasses worcestershire, vinegar, orange juice, brown sugar and water. Stir to incorporate. Cover and simmer over low heat, approximately 1.5 hours, until the sauce thickens.
  • Stir in the garlic powder, cayenne, creole seasoning, paprika, and hot sauce. Continue to simmer uncovered for 30 minutes.
  • Add salt and pepper, to taste

Notes

  • I like my sauce sweet and pretty thick. The consistency can be adjusted with more or less water and reduction time.

    • It’s so easy. And it’s adaptable. You can add more or less of any of the ingredients to your liking.
